Diagnostic assessment of prereading competence

Summary:  In order to better cope with learning difficulties in the area of reading, early detection of the deficit and early treatment are crucial. Past research confirms the importance of properly developed prereading competence when a child starts learning to read. A high risk of reading difficulties can be detected even before a child learns to read, especially before the child enters elementary school or first grade. This paper defines prereading competence and explains the different diagnostic assessment methods. Further, it presents a detailed evaluation of two instruments that are used for the early detection of potential problems in the area of reading. In conclusion, consideration is given to the appropriate use of formal and informal diagnostic assessments of prereading competence.
