Summary: The article discusses the structure of reading competence in English as a foreign language, which consists of different components that can be theoretically and empirically researched individually. However, the reading competence components act interactively. Further, the linguistic component as the key element of reading competence in the school context is discussed. Componential analysis illustrates that difficulties in any component may result in overall reading comprehension difficulties. All components have to be considered according to their potential impact so that further differentiated student learning support and instruction can be facilitated.
