Summary:  This paper aims to give an overview of social work in Germany. In so doing, the terms “Social Pedagogy” and “Social Work” are discussed and merged to form the concept of Social Work(-ing).This move is legitimized by a historical discussion of the terms. The reality of social work in Germany as a whole scarcely allows for empirical description, even if a system-theoretical analysis of the field of social work can be made for such classification. A complete definition of the practice and the theory of social work today can hardly be described in words; careful descriptions are needed, therefore, to illustrate both dimensions. The practice of social work refers to all life stages and all life functions, whereas the theory reflects upon very different cognitive traditions and the development of social fact as “the Social”. The ways in which the study of social work can depict this complexity is, therefore, a priority for training institutions.

Abstrakt:  Der Beitrag versucht einen Überblick zur Sozialen Arbeit in Deutschland zu geben. Dabei werden die Begriffe „Sozialpädagogik“ und „Sozialarbeit“ diskutiert und im Konzept der Sozialen Arbeit zusammengeführt. Dies wird auch durch einen historischen Exkurs legitimiert. Die Realität der Sozialen Arbeit in Deutschland insgesamt lässt sich empirisch kaum beschreiben, auch wenn eine systemtheoretisch angeleitete Skizze das Feld der Sozialen Arbeit eine Einordnung vornehmen kann. Auch die Praxis und die Theorie der Sozialen Arbeit heute lassen sich kaum in Worte fassen; deshalb sollen vorsichtige Charakterisierungen beide Ebenen illustrieren. Die Praxis der Sozialen Arbeit bezieht sich nämlich auf alle Lebensphasen und alle Lebensaufgaben, die Theorie reflektiert aus sehr verschiedenen kognitiven Traditionen heraus Stand und Entwicklung der gesellschaftlichen Tatsache des „Sozialen“. Wie das Studium der Sozialen Arbeit diese Komplexität abbilden kann, wird deshalb zur vorrangigen Aufgabe für die Ausbildungsinstitutionen.
