Live Case Studies in the Teaching of Logistics and Transport – Use, Benefits and Challenges for Teachers Patricija Bajec and Violeta Jurkovič
Summary: The range of competencies in logistics and transport, which are sectors with a primary role in the economy, is becoming more and more extensive. Therefore, the labour market expects graduates to be able to recognise and solve problems and master soft skills, which is why educational institutions are moving towards more experiential pedagogy. Among the teaching methods that highlight creative problem solving and innovative thinking, and seem very appropriate in cases where students are unable to do internships in the work environment, is the use of live case studies. There is no research on the use of this teaching method in logistics and transport while studies in related fields neglect the role of the teacher as a key factor in successful learning. The purpose of the present qualitative research therefore is to provide an in-depth insight into the use, benefits and challenges of the use of live case studies in teaching in the field of transport and logistics for teachers. The findings indicate that there are no major deviations in the steps of implementation if compared to previous studies, but the absence of reflection at the end of the learning cycle remains problematic. Moreover, the possibility of linking theory and practice and vice versa as a significant advantage of using live case studies for teachers was highlighted for the first time. Live case studies have a motivating effect on teachers and enhance their creativity. The challenges for teachers remain, above all, working with an external stakeholder, lack of time, and possibly the absence of live case studies in specific areas.
