Summary: The article attempts to describe certain factors that are key in the assessment process. It primarily focuses on the issue of a stimulating learning environment; the methodology and contents of assessment; the expressiveness of the current assessment system in the Slovenian primary school; and education for the assumption of responsibility in the process of learning and assessment. It arises from speci.c dilemmas of primary school teachers related to assessment, examines the reasons for them and describes possible ways for resolving these issues. It treats the Slovenian situation within global processes which have characterised education systems around the world for some time. It also touches on the tested model of the Montessori pedagogy.
